Berkshire is a town in Tioga County, New York, USA. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,412. The town is named after Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 30.2 square miles (78 km), of which, 30.2 square miles (78 km) of it is land and 0.03% is water.
The east town line of Berkshire is the border of Broome County, and part of the west town line is the border of Tompkins County.
New York State Route 38 is a north-south highway in the town.
As of the 2000 census, there were 1,366 people, 506 households, and 384 families in the town. The population density was 45.2 people per square mile (17.5/km²). There were 561 housing units at an average density of 18.6 per square mile (7.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.76% White, 0.37% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.07% Asian, and 0.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 506 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.5% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the town, the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.2 males.
